How innovations can help restore the Aral Sea?

ALMATY, October 8, 2020 — Situation analysis in the Aral Sea region and presentation of the project «Disruptive technology and innovation challenge for landscape restoration in the Aral Sea Watershed (Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan)» delivered by the Kazakh-German University in the framework of the online round table.

The event was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan, the World Bank, research institutes of Kazakhstan, specialized organizations, inspections and departments of Kazakhstan, akimats of regions — sites for the project implementation, universities of Kazakhstan, other public and international organizations interested in successful implementation of the project.

Participants noted the importance of introducing innovative technologies in the Aral region, especially in such areas as innovations and knowledge exchange, sustainable forestry, agriculture and land management, socio-economic dimension.

The round table participants talked about the importance of the project objectives for the further development of the Aral Sea region. As one of them noted: «The project is very interesting. We will be glad to take part».

Call for proposals on disruptive technology and innovation challenge for landscape restoration in the Aral Sea Watershed will be announced throughthe social media networks in the coming period.

The Project is implemented by the Kazakh-German University (DKU) and the Global Landscape Forum (GLF) with financial support from the World Bank’s Central Asian Program for Sustainable Landscape RESILAND CA+ and the Central Asia Water and Energy Program (CAWEP) funded by the European Union, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

The project partners are the Forestry and Wildlife Committee of the Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the State Committee on Forestry in Uzbekistan.
