If you are planning to spend a semester, to get a higher education, to do an internship or to do a research work in Kazakhstan, Kazakh-German University (DKU) most welcomes you! The International Department of our university provides you complete information about conditions of study at DKU, admission requirements (visa, registration, and insurance) and language courses. We are also happy to assist you in finding accommodation in Almaty.

If you are an international applicant and plan to do an undergraduate programme at DKU, you need a good command of the Russian language at a minimum level B2, as well as pre-intermediate / intermediate level of English. German is not a requirement to study at DKU It is important that you've fully completed secondary school in order to study and obtain a bachelor's degree at DKU.

Admission procedure

For admission, foreign applicants must pass entrance exams and an interview at DKU. The internal entrance procedure takes place in the format of online testing.

Documents required for application to bachelor programme submitted to the Admissions Office

  1. Certificate of secondary education/college diploma;
  2. Apostilled transcript of secondary education certificate /college diploma
  3. Notarized and apostilled translation of secondary education certificate /college diploma
  4. Notarized copy of identity card with Russian translation;
  5. 6 photos 3×4;
  6. Medical card 075-У.You get a medical card upon arrival to Kazakhstan after being examined by a medical committee. Each doctor’s stamp and the medical institution stamp must be put in the bottom left-hand corner. You are also required to get a chest X-ray. (fluorography must be attached and submitted to the Admissions office);
  7. A copy of the vaccination card;
  8. Copy of Russian language certificate (B2)

Nostrification procedure

After admission, you need to go through a national procedure to get your academic degree or certificate recognised in Kazakhstan, i.e. go through the nostrification procedure. This is in accordance with the law of Kazakhstan. Students, who do not fulfil this requirement during the first semester, lose the right to continue their studies in Kazakhstan.
You need to go through the nostrification procedure yourself, visit any Population Service Centre in Almaty. Addresses of service centres can be found here.

Documents required for the nostrification procedure:
1. Certificate of secondary education (original)*;
2. Transcript of secondary education certificate (original)*;
3. Notarized Russian or Kazakh translation of education certificate and transcript; Notarized translation of certificate is done at:
a) a notary on the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan;
b) the diplomatic service bodies of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the country in which the document was issued;
4. Russian or Kazakh translation of a notarized copy of the applicant’s ID (in case of change of surname a copy of the notarized confirming document);
5. A copy of the license and /or accreditation certificate of educational institution that issued the certificate excluding the state documents about secondary, general secondary education, certified by the seal of the institution (if necessary with a notarized translation into Kazakh and /or Russian language);
6. A card stating the student status of KGU in Russian (it can be received in Study Office of DKU);
7. Receipt of payment (payment is made after verification of documents by the specialists of the Bologna process and academic mobility centre depending on the country and year of issue of the diploma). As soon as the amount is determined by the Centre (minimum amount is 10,256 tenge, maximum amount is 26,299 tenge, and bank transfer is 200 tenge), payment has to be made to the following account:

The documents specified in subparagraphs 1 and 2 of this paragraph issued by educational institutions should be apostilled or legalised.

Registration in the Republic of Kazakhstan

Upon arrival in Kazakhstan, you must register your stay in the Migration Police Department within five calendar days.

In order to be admitted to master's degree programmes at DKU you must have a bachelor's degree and be fluent in the Russian language (B2).

Admission procedure

To enroll in the DKU Master's program, you must:

  • Submit a full package of documents to Admissions Office;
  • Pass the internal DKU entrance procedure;
  • Apply for a scholarship by the German Academic Exchange Service (part of the tuition fee).
  • Applications for admission for the Master's program are accepted from July 3 to 25, 2020.

Interview for English language proficiency in DKU.
The interview dates will be published on the website and sent to email addresses.

Documents required
A full package of documents must be submitted to the Admissions Office:

  1. Apostilled original diploma with transcript;
  2. Notarized and apostilled Russian or Kazakh translation of certificate and transcript;
  3. Notarized copy of identity card with Russian translation;
  4. 6 photos 3×4;

Registration in the Republic of Kazakhstan

Upon arrival in Kazakhstan, you must register your stay in the Migration Police Department within five calendar days.

If you are a student of a foreign university and want to study one semester on exchange, internship or do a research work at our university, this information is for you.

Your stay at our university will allow you to plunge into student life of Kazakhstan, to get acquainted with the culture and traditions of our country, to gain valuable experience in international education and certainly, to make new friends!

To participate in the exchange programme you must submit the following documents:

  1. University application form;
  2. Resume (CV);
  3. Motivation letter;
  4. Copy of transcript;
  5. Current certificate from the university;
  6. Copy of certificate from DAAD, confirming your Russian language level (B2)*;
  7. Copy of health insurance;
  8. Copy of your passport.

After confirmation of your application, you will need to get a student visa of category L1.

Duration of the semester:
Winter semester:
Lecture period: from the beginning of September until mid-December
Exams: from mid-December until the end of January
Summer semester:
Lecture period: from the beginning of February until mid-May
Exams: from mid-May until the end of June
Holidays: July, August

Application deadline for participation in the exchange programme:
Winter semester: 30 April;
Summer semester: 30 October.

Students of foreign educational institutions having the corresponding cooperation agreement with DKU can do an internship at our university. In addition, applicants must have B2 level of German or Russian.

List of documents required for internship application at DKU:

  1. Application form;
  2. Resume (CV);

  4. Copy of transcript;
  5. Valid certificate of student status;
  6. Copy of passport;
  7. Copy of health insurance.

Student visa is required for internship at Kazakhstani universities (Category L2).

If you are a citizen of a country which Kazakhstan has a visa regime with, you need a student visa of category L1 in order to study at DKU. The list of countries with visa-free regime you can find here (PDF document list).

To get a visa you need:
1. To find the visa procedure on the website of the consular mission of the Republic of Kazakhstan in your country;
2. Fill in the invitation letter form (Visaform DE and Visaform ENG) to obtain the initial student visa;
3. Send the following documents to the International Department of DKU, email address int_office@dku.kz.

  • Complete form of invitation letter;
  • Copy of passport;
  • Copy of the contract between DKU and the foreign educational institution, where you do an internship;
  • Confirmation of hotel reservation in Almaty;
  • Booked ticket.

We will send you an invitation letter within 15 working days. It must be submitted to the Embassy or Consulate of the Republic of Kazakhstan in your country along with other documents for visa. A complete list of documents for a visa is as follows:

1. Invitation letter from DKU;
2. Contract between DKU and foreign higher education institution;
3. Receipt of consular fee payment;
4. Additional documents can be requested.

Upon arrival in Kazakhstan, you must register your stay in the Migration Police Department within five calendar days. On the day of arrival or the next day you need to submit the following documents to the International Department of DKU:

  • original passport;
  • three photographs 3×4;
  • C) HIV certification (valid for 1 month). You can get the certification by taking HIV test on a paid basis at one of the Centres for control and prevention of AIDS:
    - The Republican Centre for control and prevention of AIDS: Auezov street, 84, tel. 243−22−33, 277−95−12;
    - The City Centre for control and prevention of AIDS: Bassenov street 2, tel 246−52−80, 246−53−35.
  • Fluorography (chest X-rays) — original and copy certified by the clinic stamp. You can get a chest X-ray at any hospital in Almaty for a fee.

Russian language as a language of instruction
The language of instruction is Russian during the first two years of undergraduate programme. Starting from the third year, lectures and seminars are conducted partly in English and German. Masters programmes are taught in Russian and English.
You need to have a B2 level of Russian to be able to study at DKU. Please note that DKU does not offer Russian language courses for international students.

Insurance
You must apply for health insurance to stay in Kazakhstan.

Residence
DKU does not have its own dormitory. However, we can assist in finding accommodation after your arrival. Keep in mind that the cost of rental housing in Almaty is quite high. Information about rental apartments can be found on the website.

Scholarship
You can get a scholarship to study at KGU, for example, you can apply for the programme Go East or DAAD scholarship, scholarships granted by the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Fund

Summer University
International students can take part in the educational Summer University at DKU, combining study of current environment issues, economy, natural resources of Central Asia and immersion in the Kazakh culture and tradition. Information about the annual Summer University at DKU, you can find here.
