DKU Talks «New challenges in energy policy and development"
The Kazakh-German University is pleased to invite all to the next DKU Talks with Dr. Michael Curtis on the topic «New challenges in energy policy and development». The presentation will be followed by a discussion with the participants.
Dr. Michael Curtis is Deputy Director of USAID’s Economic Development Office and leads its energy and environmental programs in Central Asia. Under his leadership, USAID implements programs related to clean energy, regional power integration, transboundary water resource management, climate change adaptation, and more.
Dr. Curtis has a Ph.D. in Public Policy from George Mason University, and MS and BS degrees in Engineering from the University of Texas.
Prior to beginning his federal service career, Dr. Curtis had over 23 years of experience as a practicing engineer and program manager. He led multi-million dollar environmental programs and projects involving hazardous waste remediation, pollution prevention, water/wastewater programs, and other engineering and construction projects.
Dr. Curtis worked for six years in USAID’s Africa Bureau in several leadership positions. He served as an Acting Deputy Assistant Administrator, where he helped to formulate and develop President Obama’s U.S. Strategy for Sub-Saharan Africa and the Power Africa Initiative, under direction from the White House. Dr. Curtis has also served as Director and Deputy Director of the Africa Bureau’s Office of Sustainable Development.
Before joining USAID, Dr. Curtis worked for the U.S. Department of Energy, where he was the Director of the Office of Technology Analysis, in the Office of Policy and International Affairs. He was the lead author on a number of publications for the International Energy Agency, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, and the U.S. Climate Change Technology Program, and served as the Department’s lead on technology transfer programs and policies.
He was an adjunct professor at George Mason University’s School of Public Policy, where he taught several courses, and was recognized by George Mason’s Dean of the Public Policy School as an outstanding adjunct faculty member. His research has focused on science and technology policy, the use of public-private partnerships for technological innovation, and energy policy.

Summary

The presentation and talk will focus on energy policy broadly, with a focus on Central Asian countries. In this regard, Dr. Curtis will provide a short overview of the energy sector, global trends and challenges in the energy sector and how these trends and challenges are relevant for Central Asia, and thoughts for the future.
The presentation will be in English.
