Summary

Rarely an European elections have been so contested as the elections to the European Parliament in 2019. The traditional major parties have lost much of their influence, whereas European opponents, populists, but also liberals and greens, have been able to gain significantly. The importance of these elections were also evident in the sharply increased turnout in many European countries. Now the question arises: what s the next for Europe? Big challenges have the institutions of the EU: the BREXIT, the handling of anti-European sentiments, the deteriorating economic situation, the reorientation of the European defense policy and also a solution to the tense relationship between Europe and Russia. All these must be tackled by the new Commission together with the other European institutions. The lecture is addressed to the interested public and also briefly introduces the basic functioning of the political system of the European Union.

The presentation will be in English.

DKU Talks is financed by DAAD from funds offered by the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
