DKU International Virtual Conference

Sustainable development in Central Asia in the light of Covid-19: the impact and the way forward

The Kazakh-German University is pleased to invite all interested Kazakhstani and foreign scholars, university lecturers, doctoral students and practitioners to participate in the International Virtual Conference «Sustainable development in Central Asia in the light of Covid-19: the impact and the way forward» to be held on April 23−24, 2021 via Zoom.

This DKU conference will explore the impact of COVID-19 on the capacity of Central Asian countries to achieve the SDGs by 2030. The choice of this topic is not accidental. The economic recession in Central Asia triggered by COVID-19 is alarming. In particular, the pandemic has shown that this crisis is fuelled by rising poverty, unemployment, weak health systems, falling education levels and lack of regional cooperation.

  • What are the potential COVID-19 recovery trajectories in the region and how can the countries of Central Asia mitigate the crisis?

  • What emergency strategies must the states of Central Asia implement in order not to jeopardize the sustainable development targets?

  • How to enhance cross-border cooperation for the sake of sustainable development?

  • How to balance the need for sustainable development and future pandemics?

This DKU conference is set to answer these and other related questions. Through dialogue between different academic disciplines and area expertise, the conference will assess how the Covid-19 has affected the region and whether regional actors are prepared to mitigate the impact of this crisis on their ability to meet the SDGs by 2030.

The conference is scheduled to take place on 23−24 April 2021 in an online format.
