Training seminars on satellite precipitation assessment and obtaining skills to work with applications developed for this purpose

From September 27 to September 30, 2021, DKU NRI, together with partners, will conduct training seminars on satellite precipitation assessment and obtaining skills to work with applications developed for this purpose.

The target audience is scientists and government officials studying climate change in Central Asia.

The trainings of the first three days are the foundation of the program, as they include 8 lectures and 3 laboratory sessions that develop the technical potential of students in assessing precipitation from different regions and strengthening knowledge about remote sensing technologies.

At the end of the introductory sessions of the workshop, more than 40 participants learned:

  • Use G-WADI CHRS RainSphere to study precipitation distribution and trends in the regions of their interests,
  • Use G-WADI CHRS iRain to get real-time information about precipitation/extreme events in the regions representing their interests,
  • Analyze uploaded PERSIANN datasets from the CHRS data portal and rain gauge data.

This knowledge and experience will be useful to a wide range of technical specialists and decision makers in the field of water resources management in the future.

Speakers and instructors of laboratory sessions:

  • Dr. Sorush Sorushyan (Director of CHRS);
  • Dr. Kuolin Xu (Professor of CHRS);
  • Dr. Fu Nguyen (Assistant Associate Professor at CHRS);
  • Claudia Jimenez Arellano (PhD student at CHRS);
  • Eric Shearer (PhD student at CHRS);
  • Vesta Afzali Gorukh (PhD student at CHRS);
  • Mojtaba Sadeghi (PhD student at CHRS).

Organizers:

  • Kazakh-German University.
  • UNESCO Chair on Water Resources Management in Central Asia.
  • UNESCO Office in Almaty.
  • University of California, Irvine.
  • The Secretariat of the UNESCO Interstate Hydrological Program.
