Official Opening of the German-Kazakh Institute of Sustainable Engineering Sciences

On June 21, 2023, the official opening of the German-Kazakh Institute of Sustainable Engineering Sciences took place in Aktau. The new educational institution is being established by the Kazakh-German University (DKU) in collaboration with the Caspian University of Technologies and Engineering named after Yessenov. A representative delegation from Germany, led by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, arrived in Aktau from Astana, where the Forum of Rectors of Kazakh-German Universities was held the day before, to attend the opening ceremony.

During the institute's opening ceremony, the presidents of both universities, the Federal President of Germany, and the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan laid a time capsule at the construction site of the new institute.

The German-Kazakh Institute of Sustainable Engineering Sciences will focus on developing future technologies and implementing the German model of applied engineering education in Kazakhstan. It is being jointly established by the Kazakh-German University (DKU) and the Caspian State University of Technologies and Engineering named after Sh. Yessenov. The institute will contribute to research and innovations that promote sustainable economic and social development in Mangystau. The German-Kazakh University (DKU) facilitated the creation of a network of partners from leading German technical universities who will collaborate with the new Kazakh-German Institute of Sustainable Engineering Sciences. This network includes the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW Hamburg), the Technical University of Berlin (TU Berlin), the Darmstadt Technical University (TUDa), and the Technical University of Wildau (TH Wildau).

«The future will show that this is a very important and unique project. We aim to educate students according to high German standards. Our project is being implemented in Aktau because it is a region with great prospects that will play a significant role between Central Asia and Europe," said President Wolrad Rommel of DKU during a meeting with the heads of German universities.

This year, the institute will launch two educational programs: «Energy and Environmental Engineering» and «Logistics.» They are aimed at training specialists for green hydrogen production in Mangystau and supporting the development of logistics for the middle transport corridor from China to Europe via the Caspian Sea.

In the field of green hydrogen, the German-Kazakh Institute of Sustainable Engineering Sciences will collaborate with the German-Swedish company SVEVIND, which is commencing the construction of a green hydrogen production plant in Mangystau and plans to create one of the world's largest mega-parks for wind and solar energy in the region
