The Student Olympiad on Sustainable Development Goals was held in Tajikistan

Our student Olympiad on Sustainable Development Goals at the national level was also held in Tajikistan. The Olympiad helps to build the capacity and deepen the knowledge of future specialists and students in the field of Sustainable Development Goals No. 6, 7, 9 and 13:

Goal 6: Ensure the availability and sustainable use of water and sanitation for all.

Goal 7: Ensure universal access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.

Goal 9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and promote innovation.

Goal 13: Take urgent action to address climate change and its impacts.

The official opening of the Olympiad took place on April 14, 2021 at the Tajik Agrarian University named after Sh. Shotemur, a partner university of the Kazakh-German University (DKU).

The Olympiad was held in three sections:

  • Integrated water resources management;
  • Climate change and clean energy;
  • Industrialization, innovation, and infrastructure.

Within two days, two stages of the Olympiad were held in an online format:

  • The first stage is written testing.
  • The second stage is an interview in the form of an oral test with the jury members.

The total number of participants in the first stage is 35 students from 5 universities in Tajikistan. The participants who scored the highest number of points based on the results of the test were invited to an interview with the jury members.

Between the written and oral stages, a seminar «Water Day» was held, where students made short presentations about their scientific works and had the opportunity to exchange experience, knowledge and skills. Also, the participants of the Olympiad were presented with information about the Central Asian Youth Water Network CAY4W, where everyone could ask their questions to the national coordinator.

The participants of the second stage, which was held with the participation of the national coordinator of CAY4W, visited the beautiful lake Iskanderkul in the Fann Mountains to get acquainted with the environment and talk about common topics in an informal atmosphere.

The winners of the second stage will be informed by e-mail about their further participation in the regional stage of the Olympiad.

DKU expresses its gratitude to the Tajik Agricultural University named after Sh. Shotemur and other universities of Tajikistan for their assistance in holding the Olympiad.

The event was organized by the DKU Institute of Natural Resources in cooperation with the Central Asian Youth Water Network CAY4W, with financial support from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the World Bank, as well as with the expert support of the Global Water Partnership and The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) together with the UN Information Centre in Almaty.
