Round table to discuss the policy of education in the field of RE

On December 15, 2020, within the Renewable Energy Trip 2020 project the round table «Discussion the policy of education in the field of RE and energy efficiency (EE)» passed in online and offline formats on the basis of the Kazakhstan-German university (DKU), Almaty.

The project «Renewable Energy Trip 2020: Educational trip to study the best practices of renewable energy” is carried out by the Natural Resources Institute of DKU with the assistance of the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU), the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan and with the direct facilitation of Solar Power Association of Kazakhstan (SPAQ).

The purpose of the round table was to discuss the policy of education development in the field of renewable energy and EE in Kazakhstan, and the needs of business and industry in specialists.

The tasks of the event were divided into:

1) discussion of the policy of education development in the sphere of RE and EE in Kazakhstan from the point of view of state organizations, education and energy of Kazakhstan; from the point of view of universities; from the point of view of business structures;

2) discussion of universities and international programs contribution to the development of education in Kazakhstan and Central Asia;

3) discussion of business needs in renewable energy and EE specialists in Kazakhstan.

The opening of the round table was held with welcoming words of DKU Vice-rector for international cooperation, UNESCO Chair Holder in Water Management in Central Asia Dr. Barbara Janusz-Pawletta and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Kazakhstan Solar Energy Association (SPAQ) Nurlan Kapenov.

The representative of the Renewable Energy Department of the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan followed by statements; Uta Carringer, Head of Academic Programs and Training at RENAC; and USAID Power Central Asia Project Manager and Deputy Project Manager Michael Boyd and Bayan Abylkairova, respectively.

Next speakers were business representatives including representatives of small businesses in Germany, as well as representatives of higher education, including participants in the round table from Central Asia, Kazakhstan and Germany.

An interesting report on the educational trip «RE Trip 2020» was presented by its participants.

We made a presentation of DKU's new master's degree program «Strategic Management of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency» during the round table. This program is a new qualitative element in the renewable energy sector in Kazakhstan.

The needs for renewable energy and EE specialists in business and industry were considered by the participants of the round table, including business representatives, representatives of education of Central and Kazakhstan countries, as well as representatives of the Green Economy Department of the Almaty Akimat.

Participants actively discussed the potential of higher education, as well as raised the question of the need, or vice versa, for the unprofitability of establishing capacities for the production of equipment for the needs of renewable energy plants.

The round table was one of the steps towards the development of renewable and clean energy sources in Kazakhstan.
