On April 9, 2021, the Final of the World Breakthrough Technology Competition 2021

The best ideas were selected by a jury consisting of 42 leading experts from around the world. The World Bank and partner organizations.

On April 6 and 7, 2021, presentations of 12 more finalist teams were held in two directions. Information on the first two sessions is available here.

1. Socio-economic development:

-Eco-island with a closed cycle for landscape restoration + carbon sequestration + circular economy;

-News on the YouTube channel «Lands and Water of Central Asia»;

-Let's fill the Aral Sea with an ocean of sounds;

-Professional development of women in water and land management;

-Sustainable agro-business (SSEA) in harmony with the flora and fauna;

-Competitive advantages for the youth of Central Asia.

2. Information and knowledge:

-Sensors for sustainable Pasture management (SenSPaApp);

-Use big data analytics technology to improve landscape restoration efforts;

-Open access to information services for land and water management;

-Remote sensing of degraded land using drones;

-Artificial intelligence and protection of the Aral Sea;

-Collection of climate data in the disaster zone of the Aral Sea.

Each team talked about their project for 10 minutes and answered the questions of the jury.

Each project that received the grand prize was awarded $ 5,000 and the opportunity to participate in a mentoring program for their contribution to the restoration of the Aral Sea.

Winning projects in 4 areas:

-Agriculture and Land Management: GEOWALL® Запатентов (Netherlands), a NETICS-patented land processing technology;

-Sustainable forestry: Aral Honey Gardens (Uzbekistan);

-Professional development of women in water and land management (Tajikistan);

-Information and knowledge: Sensors for sustainable pasture management (Greece).

The projects that took 2nd place in the Competition won $ 1,000 each and were awarded in the «Rising Star» category:

-Nutrient hydrogel for water conservation and soil aeration (Kyrgyz Republic);

-Regenerative solutions in the field of agroforestry (Uzbekistan);

-News about the Aral Sea basin on the YouTube channel «Land and Water of Central Asia» (Germany);

-(collective) Remote sensing of degraded land using drones (Kazakhstan); Open access to information services for land and water management (Netherlands);

The competition is organized by the World Bank with the support of the Water and Energy Program for Central Asia (CAWEP), a multi-stakeholder trust fund funded by the European Union, Switzerland and The United Kingdom. The competition is led by the World Bank and informs about the Central Asian Sustainable Landscape Program RESILAND CA+, which is currently under preparation. The competition is implemented by the Kazakh-German University (DKU), the Global Landscape Forum (GLF) and Plug and Play (P&P).
