DKU hosted the second seminar on «The Cargo Bicycle — the Old New Car for Urban Logistics»

It was organised by LogCentre, the Communication and Transfer Centre for Logistics, based at the Kazakh-German University.

This seminar series aims at initiating new sustainable urban logistics solutions and has three objectives:

  • Motivating stakeholders to initiate new urban logistics systems;

  • To inform about innovative urban logistics solutions and planning principles;

  • To demonstrate the feasibility of freight bikes as a solution for urban logistics development and to develop an urban logistics addendum for SUMP (Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan).

The speaker of the meeting was Tom Assmann, Head of research group at the University of Magdeburg and expert in urban logistics planning and new technologies for sustainable logistics. He is currently also a consultant in urban logistics projects in Germany.

During his presentation Tom talked about the types of cargo bikes and their history of use. Particular attention was paid to the use of modern cargo bikes in urban environments:

  • dimensions and types of loads;

  • delivery distances;

  • systems of transport hubs in use;

  • practical examples of use.

During the discussion, participants actively asked questions, including the legal aspects of the use of this mode of transport for freight transport in Kazakhstan. The lively discussion perfectly reflected the interest of the local companies in the project.
