DKU Talks on Civil Activism in Central Asia will be held on November 27, 2020

The Kazakh-German University is happy to invite everyone to DKU Talk «Civil activism in Central Asia: origins, dynamics and prospects», which will be held live on November 27, at 16: 00 (Almaty time).

One of the most noticeable phenomena in recent years has been the growth of civic activity and social movements in the region. How can we explain the raising in civic activism, what role do social movements play in modern society, and who is the driving force within them? To discuss these and other issues, we invited experts from Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan: Assel Doolotkeldieva, Nurseit Niyazbekov and Kamila Kovyazina.

Dr. pol.sc. Asel Doolotkeldieva is a lecturer and researcher at the OSCE Academy in Bishkek, as well as an author of scientific publications on social mobilizations and protests, the political economy of resource extraction and resource nationalism, post-socialism, political regimes and civil society in Central Asia.

Dr. pol.sc. Nurseit Niyazbekov is an Assistant Professor at KIMEP University and an expert on social movements and democratization in post-Communist and developing countries, political culture and civil society in Central Asia. Dr. Niyazbekov defended his doctoral thesis on protest mobilization and democratization in Kazakhstan at the University of Oxford. He is also the coordinator of the Kazakhstan project «Varieties of Democracy» at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden.

Kamila Kovyazina is a research fellow of the Institute of World Economics and Politics under the Fund of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Project Manager for the development of youth housing project of the Ministry of Education and the World Bank. She has extensive research experience in the field of public policy in Kazakhstan.

The working language of the event will be Russian.
