Eco-research in Almaty region

Do you know how animals can help study the interdependence of food, energy, water and ecosystems?

We are assisted by sensors for tracking the movement of animals in pastures that we use as part of the DKU Natural Resources Institute's research project:

«Interdependent dynamics of food, energy and water (FEW): related to land-use change and land cover with transitional socio-ecological systems on the example of Almaty region».

In October 2020 we conducted a survey of local shepherds and selected animals to install collars with sensors.

In January 2021 we plan to remove the first batch of sensors for their analysis. At the same time, we will place a second batch of sensors.

The purpose of the study is to evaluate and analyze the effectiveness of using the feed capacity of the vegetative cover and preserving them in the future.

This study is very important for assessing the impact of land-use change, evapotranspiration and albedo using satellite imagery, as well as identifying the indirect effects of infrastructure, farmer demographics and climate in the area.
