The Kazakh-German University (DKU) is one of Germany’s key projects in the field of external academic and educational cooperation in Central Asia. For over 15 years, DKU has been supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) with funding from the Federal Foreign Office of Germany and maintains close cooperation with a network of German partner universities, united in a consortium.
Each year, representatives of DKU and its partner universities meet for a workshop to discuss the strategic development of the university. This year, the workshop was held on June 26-27, 2025, at the Technical University of Wildau (TH Wildau), which has been coordinating the DAAD project and leading the consortium since January 2025.
Welcome speeches were delivered by the President of TH Wildau, Professor Ulrike Tippe, the project leader Professor Jens Wollenweber, and the President of DKU, Professor Wolrad Rommel. The event was also attended by Ms. Leila Ashimzhanova, Counselor and Head of the Cultural Section of the Embassy of Kazakhstan in Germany, who emphasized the growing importance of relations between Kazakhstan and Germany.
The project team presented updates on current activities and future plans. Professor Wolrad Rommel outlined recent developments and the strategic direction of DKU.
In the next session, participants worked in four groups, discussing various aspects of academic cooperation between DKU and German partner universities. Topics included the future of the Flying Faculty program, internal communication within the consortium, DKU’s visibility in Europe and Central Asia, and joint efforts to promote educational programs.
On the following day, the working groups presented their results and discussed possible next steps. In the closing session, participants noted the productive atmosphere and strong engagement from all sides. The next workshop is scheduled for 2026 at Zittau/Görlitz University.
