From August 25 to 29, 2025, the German-Kazakh University (DKU) hosted a regional training on the production and use of “green” hydrogen (PtX – Power-to-X) for faculty members of technical universities in Central Asia. The event was organized by the GIZ Hydrogen Diplomacy Office in Astana in cooperation with DKU and supported by Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW Hamburg).
Professors and experts from Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan took part. Lectures and practical sessions were delivered by Prof. Sebastian Timmerberg (HAW Hamburg) and Alexey Kobzev (DKU), covering hydrogen production, storage, applications, and integration of PtX technologies into education.
The program featured lectures, interactive sessions, group projects, and practical tasks on hydrogen technology economics, environmental aspects, and market analysis. Participants worked on case studies, explored business opportunities, and developed proposals to update curricula at their home universities.
Key highlights included field visits to renewable energy and industry sites: the Kapchagay hydropower plant, a 2 MW solar power plant in Konaev, DKU’s rooftop solar station, and its renewable energy laboratory.
At the end, participants received certificates and teaching materials to integrate into their academic work.
Organizers emphasized that training university staff is crucial for advancing hydrogen technology and sustainable energy education in Central Asia. Such programs also foster academic communities, strengthen international ties, and lay the groundwork for joint projects and publications.
DKU is currently developing a new Master’s program on “green” hydrogen.
