The Kazakh-German Nexus Institute is being established in Almaty to address water and climate challenges in Central Asia

At the Kazakh National Agrarian Research University (KazNARU), a new scientific and educational center — Kazakh-German Nexus Institute — is being founded.

This joint Kazakhstan-German project aims to develop sustainable and integrated solutions in the fields of land and water management, energy, and biodiversity conservation. The Institute will serve as a platform that unites the scientific potential of national and international experts.

The founding institutions include the Kazakh-German University, the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and KazNARU, with the strategic support of the Hanns Seidel Foundation.

The main mission of the Nexus Institute is to contribute to the sustainable development of Central Asia by integrating scientific approaches to interconnected issues of land, water, energy, and ecology. The focus will be on interdisciplinary research, international academic mobility, and training specialists equipped to work under the conditions of climate change.

Key areas of activity of the Institute include:

  • Development of effective policies in sustainable land and water management.
  • Implementation of digital technologies for natural resource monitoring.
  • Training of professionals with competencies to address climate change challenges.
  • Promotion of practices aimed at preventing land degradation and desertification.

German partners, including the Hanns Seidel Foundation, provide both expert and financial support — from launching research projects and conducting strategic sessions to developing modern educational platforms.

The establishment of the Nexus Institute represents an important step in strengthening Kazakhstan-German cooperation and in building an academic infrastructure capable of responding to regional challenges and contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
