5th International Conference “Silk Road of Knowledge”

On September 20, 2025, the 5th International Conference “Silk Road of Knowledge: Climate Mitigation and Adaptation in an Era of Socio-Ecological Uncertainties” will take place at the Kazakh-German University in Almaty. The event will be held in a hybrid format — with the possibility of both in-person and online participation.

Since 2020, the conference has served as a unique platform for dialogue between policymakers, scientists, technical experts, and representatives of civil society. Over five years, the project has brought together more than two thousand participants and over one hundred organizations from different countries.

The 2025 conference program covers a wide range of pressing topics: from glacier monitoring and modeling to innovative methods of hydrological forecasting, from the gender dimension of climate change to sustainable urban planning. Special attention will be given to practical solutions, including an interactive session on the use of the Droughtmap-ASB tool to enhance resilience to droughts.

Thematic sessions:

  • Glacier monitoring and modeling under climate change
  • Gender and climate in Central Asia
  • Innovative approaches in hydrological forecasting
  • Online tools for climate impact assessment
  • Practical session on the Droughtmap-ASB tool: strengthening drought resilience (led by Prof. Dr. Christopher Conrad and Dr.-Ing. Muhammad Usman, Martin Luther University, Germany)
  • Sustainable urban planning under climate change

The main goals of the conference are the exchange of scientific results and innovations, the discussion of recommendations for political and economic strategies, the development of integrated approaches to sustainable development, and the involvement of youth and women in shaping the climate agenda. Based on the discussions, analytical materials will be prepared to strengthen science-policy interaction in the region.

Organizers and partners include leading international institutions: Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences, Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (Germany).

Participation in the conference is free of charge. The number of in-person seats is limited. Registration is open until September 18, 2025 via the link: https://forms.gle/P4hDJPZtH5hCdqCv5 or on the website srkc.dku.kz.
