DKU Talks «Energy Transition in Central Asia: Why and How?», 29.10.2020

The Kazakh-German University is pleased to invite all to the DKU Talk «Energy Transition in Central Asia: Why and How?» taking place in online format on Oсtober 29 at 6 pm (Almaty time).

Energy is substantial and essential for nearly anything we do anytime and every day and in a world with a rapidly growing population more and more people demand 24/7 available and reliable energy at reasonable and affordable costs. However, the energy for a rapid growing global population has to be based on zero carbon emission which undoubtful is the main driver for global warming and all its dangerous consequences.

Besides the impression that there is sufficient oil and gas left due to the currently very low or in some cases even negative market prices we are without any doubt running out of limited fossil energy sources. The energy transition from fossil to non-fossil sources is gradually becoming a global phenomenon due to the growing awareness and impending consequences resulting from global warming.

In connection with this global problem our next DKU Talk will discuss why do we have to transform our energy systems, what would be the challenges to do so, particularly in Central Asia, how could a transformation of energy supply systems be financed and what is the role and challenges in creating a united electric power market in Central Asia. We will discuss all these issues with experts from Germany Prof. Dr. Bernd Delakowitz, from UAE Dr. Farkhod Aminjonov and from Kyrgystan Dr. Rahat Sabyrbekov.

Dr. Delakowitz has been dealing with the topic of climate change for years. He obtained his PhD at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich. He was a full professor at the University of Applied Sciences Zittau-Görlitz and was the chair of the Department for Life Cycle Assessment, Environmental Law and Operational Environmental Management. He was also Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and Director of the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Protection. Furthermore, Prof. Delakowitz led numerous research projects in the field of environmental protection with a focus on the areas of global climate change, renewable energies and energy efficiency. He holds regularly lectures at numerous international institutions and universities, including in England, Sweden, Poland, Lithuania, Mexico, Russia, Kazakhstan and the United States.

Dr. Rahat Sabyrbekov is an economist with extensive experience in policy analysis, research and modelling with work experience in International Finance Corporation, World Bank, Ministry of Economy and National Bank. Dr. Sabyrbekov is post-doc researcher at OSCE Academy in Bishkek and Associate Professor in Economics Department at the American University of Central Asia in Kyrgyzstan. He obtained his PhD at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. Dr. Sabyrbekov is also Project Coordinator in Kyrgyz-Norwegian Educational Project (6 million NOK project (750 000 USD)). He has a track record of publications and did cost-benefit analysis for livestock management policies to combat land Degradation in GIZ Project and for Glacier protection legislation to present at the national parliament.

Dr. Farkhod Aminjonov is Co-Director of CAISS and Assistant Professor at Zayed University in UAE. Previously, he worked as a Senior Research Fellow at the Eurasian Research Institute of Akhmet Yassawi International Kazakh — Turkish University, where he contributed to Institute’s work on energy, finance, and security. Dr. Aminjonov is currently engaged in a number of collaborative projects with the Canadian, German, Norwegian, U.S. and Turkish research institutions as well as international organizations, such as International Organization for Migration. He also has an experience conducting research at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs in Oslo, Norway. Farkhod Aminjonov holds a Ph.D. in global governance from Wilfrid Laurier University/ Balsillie School of International Affairs (Canada). Dr. Aminjonov has a track record of publications and teaching experience in the department of Political Science at Wilfrid Laurier University, Canada. Energy security and security of the Central Asian energy systems, energy governance innovations, pipeline politics, trans-boundary water management and hydropower sector development as well as foreign and domestic energy policies lie in the hub of his research interests.
