DAAD-Workshop «Non-Conflicts» in Central Asia

In cooperation with the Kazakh-German University (DKU) and Al-Farabi University (KazNU), Hochschule Rhein-Waal (HSRW) invites applications for participation in the workshop «Non-Conflicts” in Central Asia, to be held in June 2020 in Almaty, Kazakh-stan. The workshop will be funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in the framework of the Ost-West-Dialog programme.

The research-driven workshop takes up the theme of non-conflicts and applies it to Central Asia, discussing three cases where violence might have occurred, but actually did not: Northern Kazakhstan, Southern Kyrgyzstan and Northwestern Uzbekistan. The overarching academic goal is to find out whether these cases are non-conflicts, i.e. vis-ible or latent tensions that could have credibly led to large-scale violence, up to civil or inter-state war, but actually did not, for reasons to be fleshed out by the participants and tutors. In answering this question, participants will improve their knowledge about comparative conflict studies and conflict prevention.

The workshop will include five modules, taught by Dr. Sebastian Mayer (DKU), Dr. Corinna Hauswedell (Conflict Analysis and Dialogue, Bonn), Dr. Niklas Rolf (HSRW), Thorsten Kaesler (KazNU) and Zhulduz Baizakova (KazNU). A certificate will be awarded upon completion of the workshop.

Duration: 15 to 23 June 2020

Location: Hotel Kazzhol, Almaty, Kazakhstan

Benefits: There will be no tuition fees. All participants will be provided lunch during conference days as designated in the final program. Dinners are not included. Partici-pants currently residing outside Almaty will be provided accommodation (shared dou-ble rooms) and breakfast. They will also receive a travel allowance roughly commensu-rate with the distance of their travel and actual costs. Travel must be organized at rea-sonable costs, e.g. traveling from Bishkek by Marshroutka, not by plane.

Eligibility: To be able to apply, you must be an MA or PhD student currently residing and having an institutional affiliation in Germany, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan or Uzbekistan, have a strong interest in the theme of the workshop, and have a strong command of English. Exceptionally outstanding BA students (3rd and 4th year only) with a documented proof of research interests (to be specified in the letter of motivation) may also apply.
